Splash Mid-South has based its efforts on cutting-edge research about minorities and swimming participation.
University of Memphis researchers Carol C. Irwin, Ph.D. and Richard L. Irwin, Ed.D., have completed two studies, commissioned by USA Swimming. The Irwins also serve on the Splash Mid-South Advisory Board.
In the first study of its kind, “Constraints Impacting Minority Swimming Participation” discovered the gaps and barriers in minority swimming:
- 68.9 percent of African American youth and 57.6 percent of Hispanic/Latino youth have no or low swimming ability
- African American and Hispanic/Latino youth are three times more likely to drown compared to their White counterparts
Splash Mid-South, along with Carol C. Irwin, Ph.D. and Richard L. Irwin, Ed.D., conduct research to measure the effectiveness of Splash Mid-South programs.
